Making a netbook work like Kindle

Postby kentuckyliz on Fri Mar 13, 2009 7:46 am

OK so I've been seeing all the buzz about Kindle, Amazon's ereading device.

Is there any way to make a netbook work like Kindle? :?: Custom hackery, anyone? :?:

I recently tinkered with ereader.com, my ipod touch, and may download Plucker to convert free public domain works from txt or pdf files to pdb format for mobile devices. But it's just so darn small and my middle age presbyopic eyeballs don't like it.

So, before I drop $359 on a Kindle, help me work up a clever solution to transform my netbook into a Kindle. A bookmarking function would be important to have. Highlighting, notes, clippings would be nice but optional.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Do you have any sort of ereader set up on your nettie? That's what I'm trying to figure out how to do.

Have you tried Adobe Digital Editions?: http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/

It will do most of the requirements that you listed.

Personally I would prefer a netbook over an ebook reader like the Kindle (you can get software that makes the netbook work in the same way). But if you are serious about buying an ebook reader you should also check out the Sony Reader and the Fujitsu eBook Reader (color).

I went ahead and ordered the Kindle, just to give it a try. I don't get whispernet signal at my house...but I do in the towns where I spend most of my time for work, school, church. So I'll have to sync it elsewhere.

I like the eInk idea -- less glare. The size and weight is nice. I've practiced navigating around the menu. Didn't make it into town today so haven't synced yet or tried reading anything on it. So, we shall see!

Maybe I need to start hauling around a rolling case to pack along all my tech toys...

Wow Liz, nice line up of tech gadgets (toys) you have there! And you have appropriately named it the "kindie".

Let us know what you think of the Kindle, and how it compares to reading ebooks on a netbook. You are probably the best one to answer your own question now!
